Plays in the Pipeline

You’ll need both hands to count them: Roundabout will have 10 newly commissioned plays in various stages of development this year, thanks in part to grants from the Educational Foundation of America, the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation Theatre Visions Fund, and the New York State Council on the Arts. For writers like Stephen Karam and Steven Levenson, both of whom debuted their work for New York audiences at the Roundabout Underground, these commissions represent a step forward in their growing careers. Other writers at work include Robert Lopez, a Tony Award winner for the score of Avenue Q, who is writing a musical with wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez that received its first reading this spring. Several fantastic female playwrights also have been commissioned, including Julia Cho, Lydia Diamond, and Julie Marie Myatt, all of whom have received acclaim for their work at venues across the country. The commissions reflect Roundabout’s commitment to developing the work of today’s best writers, no matter where they are in their careers. Hopefully, you will soon be seeing these plays on Roundabout’s stages and
beyond.
